Ultimate 17-Day Backpacking Itinerary: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia
I started researching months before my first backpacking trip outside my country. I delved into in-depth research on the countries that I wished to explore. What to expect from there, how to get there, and get around, admission fees, etc. And of course, the most important thing is the Dos and Don’ts.
I know most travelers out there plan their trip in advance, but I did way too much in advance here. I gave myself at least four months to polish this itinerary. I wanted to ensure ease of travel. I read blogs, reviews, advice, and anything about the place I want to visit. It sounds difficult and time-consuming, but the result was worth it.
I’m going to share here my 17-day South East Asia itinerary. This is not my original itinerary. I had to extend my stay in Ho Chi Minh City. This was due to miscommunication. The hostel didn’t book me an overnight bus ride to Phnom Penh. When I got there, they couldn’t find a seat anymore. Also, I missed an activity due to late arrival.

Tips
· Always haggle with tuk-tuk drivers and market sellers/hawkers.
· Stay at the accommodation lobbies and be acquainted with other travelers to find a company to split the bill with if you plan to go to some remote places where you will need to hire a tuk-tuk.
· Stay in a hostel or a guesthouse as it is much cheaper. It’s even cheaper if you stay in dormitory rooms (you’ll only sleep and take a shower there anyway, so what’s the use of paying for a posh room, right?)
· Bring a padlock instead of renting one. You can use this for the lockers to store your things in the dormitory rooms.
· Always remember to observe the dress code when visiting temples. Avoid wearing sleeveless or shorts. Alternatively, bring a shawl or sarong to cover up.
· Use a money belt for your cash and passport. Though hostels and guesthouses have lockers, it’s still safer to take your valuables with you all the time.
· With the 4 countries I visited, not all restaurants accept credit cards. It's advisable to carry small change when going about.
· Book your accommodation in advance. Before doing so, ask them if they can help you book a bus ride to your next destination. Do this if you can't book transportation online.
I will be sharing my escapades on separate blogs, so stay tuned, friends!
