Discover the Best of Istanbul in Just 3 Days

From ancient cisterns and grand mosques to bustling bazaars and panoramic rooftops, my Istanbul adventure was a whirlwind of history, culture, and delightfully steep cobbled streets.

Day 1: Sultanahmet to Galata

First stop: the hauntingly beautiful Basilica Cistern, where Medusa’s stony gaze greeted me underground. A short climb led to Hagia Sophia, then a quick kofte stop at Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi, right across the majestic Blue Mosque.

After admiring ancient obelisks at the Hippodrome, we hopped on Tram 1 to Eminönü and explored the aromatic chaos of the Spice Market and the elegant Yeni Camii (New Mosque).

Later, we ascended through Taksim and strolled Istiklal Street, catching the nostalgic tram and wandering down to Galata Tower, winding through centuries-old streets filled with synagogues, churches, and hidden gems.

Day 2: Walls, Churches, and Cruise

Morning took us to Chora Church, then along the mighty Theodosian Walls, once the spine of ancient Constantinople. Lunch at Istanbul Cevahir, once the largest shopping mall in Europe.

Right after lunchtime, we were strolling the opulent halls of Dolmabahce Palace.

A quick visit to Miniatürk Park gave us Turkey in miniature. Perfect for a breather before changing for the evening cruise.

Dinner was onboard a Bosphorus Cruise, dancing with Istanbul’s glittering skyline.

Days 3 and 4: Cappadocia (separate post)

Day 5: Last Moments in Istanbul and Shopping

Our last morning in Istanbul began peacefully with breakfast at the hotel, savoring every bite as we knew the journey was wrapping up.

By 9 AM, we headed for one final Turkish treat: shopping for leather jackets! Istanbul is known for its high-quality leather jackets, which can be a worthwhile purchase.

Last glimpse of the Hagia Sofia and a visit to Topkapi Palace, and by 11 AM, we were back at the hostel, packed up, and reluctantly checked out. There’s something uniquely sad about leaving such a magical city.

At 2 PM, it was time to say: “Güle güle, Istanbul. Until we meet again.”
