Riding the Rapids: Cagayan de Oro White-Water Rafting
I may cling to the edge of the pool at parties and avoid
open water swimming, but I can't resist trying water adventures like
white-water rafting.
Cagayan de Oro, the “White‑Water Rafting Capital of
the Philippines,” is famous for this heart-pounding activity. One summer
morning, I flew from Cebu to CDO
just in time for my rafting pick-up.
Getting
There & Preparation
Before
boarding, we went through a safety briefing: don life vests and helmets, learn
paddle commands (“forward,” “stop,” “high five”), and practice what to do if
your raft flips. This gave me confidence. Even as a non-swimmer, I knew to
stay calm, float on my back downstream, and let the guides assist if needed.
Navigating
the River
I
loved watching the riverbanks where locals washed clothes and kids waved as we passed by. A vivid reminder that the river is still a part of everyday life here.

We were all
craving one more
rapid when the rafting ended. Nobody wanted it to be over! What
started as a quiet bunch of strangers turned into a loud, happy raft family by
the end, laughing and swapping stories like old friends. It was an
unforgettable splash of adventure!
Sun,
Safety & Snacks
Expect to be under the sun for hours. Wear rash
guards or dri-fit clothes, sturdy sandals (or go barefoot!), and reapply
sunscreen. I learned this the hard way, ending with a fierce thigh burn.
Lunch came afterward in a riverside area equipped with
showers and changing facilities. Documentation packages are usually available.
Mine included a copy of photos taken mid-rapids, which was delivered by evening.

Wind-Down
in CDO City
I stayed two nights in CDO, and returned from Camiguin for another two days, just enough time to explore the town before flying back to Manila.
Limketkai Center became my go-to for dinner and souvenirs, highlighted by its
iconic boat-shaped design amid the sprawling mall complex.

Quick
Tips for Future Rafters
- Book the Advance Course (21–22 rapids, ~3–4 hrs) for a full experience
- Wear quick-dry clothing, strap-on sandals, a rash guard, and bring water
- The guide’s commands aren’t just for show. Listen closely and repeat them for group cohesion.
- Not a swimmer? No problem. Wear your life vest properly and trust the river and guide.
- Don’t forget to grab the photo/video package. You’ll want proof of every splash.
White-water rafting in Cagayan de Oro isn’t just a thrill.
It’s an intimate dance with nature and new friends. For a non-swimmer like me,
it was a breakthrough: adrenaline, laughter, connection. If you ever visit CDO,
this has to be on your must-do list.
