Overnight in the City of Smiles – Bacolod

I had just one night in Bacolod, the charming capital of Negros Occidental, also known as the City of Smiles and famed for its delicious inasal (skewered roast chicken).

Arrival and First Bite

I dropped my backpack at the hotel and hopped on a jeepney to SM City Bacolod because my stomach was growling after only snacking on piaya during the earlier travel from Boracay to Iloilo

Inside the mall, Deco’s La Paz Batchoy caught my eye, and I couldn’t resist. Though this noodle soup originates from Iloilo, it was hands-down the best bowl I’ve ever tasted.

Evening Walk & Historic Sights

Thinking I'd rest first, I ventured back out after a quick recharge. A short walk brought me to Bacolod City Hall, and right in front stood the Fountain of Justice, the symbolic site where Spaniards surrendered to the Filipino revolutionaries in 1898 during the Negros Revolution.

Continuing deeper into the heart of the city, I arrived at San Sebastian Cathedral, a stunning coral-stone church that was completed in 1882 and officially became a cathedral in 1933.

The twin bell towers and elegant façade of this cathedral overlook the plaza. It felt like stepping into a living history.

Street Food Finale

After exploring the Central Market, I couldn’t resist the street food stalls. My batchoy may have been filling, but there was still room for kikiam, fish balls, and squid balls. A perfect local indulgence under Bacolod’s glowing streetlights.

Reflections Before Cebu

Bacolod was a whirlwind. Mostly lived in transit, yet so full of flavor, history, and warmth. I felt energized and not exhausted, just the thrill of discovering something new. That night, I drifted to sleep knowing my next day would begin with a flight to Cebu, the 4th leg of this grand backpacking journey.
